Sakhalin UK Learning Visit, 2007

I didn’t really think that it was possible for oil and gas companies to cooperate with local government and universities to improve the quality of life of communities; now I know that it can happen..

From Sunday 13th May to Wednesday 23rd May 2007, twelve visitors from Sakhalin Island (Russia) visited the UK, on a learning visit organised and coordinated by the Living Earth Foundation.

This is the second project implemented in the framework of the partnership between the Living Earth Foundation (LEF) and Sakhalin State University - SSU, promoting sustainable development in Sakhalin. (see below)

The group comprised local government officials, local NGO representatives
and the Vice Rector's and lecturers from Sakhalin State University
(SSU). The delegates travelled to Aberdeen and the Shetland Islands to meet with a variety of individuals and organisations.

The purpose of the visit was to get first hand information about the North Sea oil and gas operations in the UK, their impacts (environmental, economic and social) and associated social-institutional dynamics; as well as to provide face-to-face opportunities to exchange ideas and views with people and organisations directly associated with managing the operations and/or impacts of the process.
