Sustainable Development Training

As part of our work on sustainable development on Sakhalin Island, LEF designed and developed the training course An Introduction to Sustainable Development for key stakeholders in Korsakov city and District.

Programme Aim

The programme aims to give the participants from the different sectors the tools, skills, self confidence and practical experience needed to develop constructive relations and partnerships geared towards sustainable development.

Programme Activities

This training course has been developed in partnership with Sakhalin State University (SSU), and is being delivered by LEF in conjunction with the newly formed Sustainable Development (SD) Department of the University. It was formally initiated in Korsakov on 21st September 2007, and ran until May 2009.

Twenty key stakeholders from government, civil society organisations and the private sector participated in the programme, which was based on eight units delivered in nine 2-day modules. The training was accredited by SSU and LEF. The course promoted active learning, and incorporated problem-solving exercises, field trips, group work and role-play, as well as visits to project sites.
A year-long Training of Trainers course for 5 lecturers from SSU ran in parallel to this, and the SSU participants co-tutored the Korsakov course from beginning to end, along with Edgardo Garcia Larralde and Ed Craven of Living Earth. This helped to build the capacity of the SD Department of SSU to deliver learning-and-action projects aimed at promoting the sustainable development of Sakhalin.
