Environmental Education in Lake Valencia

In 1993, Tierra Viva started the Environmental Education Project for the Lake Valencia area. Within this project a series of programmes were delivered in order to promote the development of participative environmental projects, which addressed environmental issues in the surrounding schools and communities and were aimed at improving the local quality of life.

Project Activities

A total of 20 schools, 14 NGOs and more than 49,000 people participated in 116 local environmental projects through the Environmental Education for Lake Valencia Watershed project. These participants included teachers, pupils and local residents. The projects confronted environmental problems through specific actions, encouraging reflection and the exchange of information and were identified through participative analysis.

Project Outcome

This project concluded in 1995. Tierra Viva was then recognised for its environmental education and community development work in the Lake Valencia Basin. An award was given by the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the Inter-American Foundation in recognition of Tierra Viva’s work in poverty alleviation through environmental education.

Project funding

The project received funding from the European Union through Living Earth Foundation.
