Living Earth Uganda recently hosted representatives from Living Earth Foundation UK, Living Earth Cameroon and AA Peace Works Nigeria, to attend a seven day Pan African Exchange visit. The objective was to promote shared learning and experience amongst participating organizations, with reference to the ‘Waste to Wealth’ project.
Attendees participated in a variety of activities; these encompassed meeting with representatives of small micro enterprises involved in Waste to Wealth activities; from creating charcoal briquette using biodegradable waste, recycling waste plastic materials into handcrafts through to waste plastic collection and sorting businesses.

Site visits undertaken to the plastic recycling industry, provided an opportunity for staff members to observe where collected waste plastics are sold for recycling; a means of generating income for local collectors.
Through attending meetings with Local Government Authorities and stakeholders including the Nansana Town Clerk, Mayor and Chairperson of the Project Advisory Panel for the Waste to Wealth Project in Uganda, key issues were discussed on areas pertaining to good governance, challenges in implementing micro-level public-private partnerships and ensuring a way forward for the successful implementation of the project.
A three day training course on monitoring and evaluation was facilitated by a consultant from Living Earth Foundation UK; this focused on understanding tools for effective monitoring and evaluation methods, the importance of stakeholder engagement and developing effective project management methods. At the end of the training, participants were awarded with certificates and thanked for their attendance.

The Pan African Exchange visit was supported by the Commonwealth Foundation in Partnership with the European Commission, under the project of improved conditions in urban slums.
