On 22nd September 2011, FCTV organised a multi-stakeholder workshop at Douala City Council to present the findings of a review on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in Cameroon and Douala particularly. FCTV commissioned the review in order to identify the policy context for formulating PPPs in Cameroon, the barriers and challenges that PPPs face and to document examples of Local Government outsourcing and partnering for service delivery.
Over sixty people attended the workshop, including the Departmental Delegate for the Ministry of Environment (MINEP), representatives from the councils of Douala 2, Douala 3 and Douala 4, the Chiefs of the target communities in which FCTV is working, representatives from civil society organisations working in the field of waste collection and recycling as well as representatives from both the formal and informal private sector.
There was a great deal of interest in the findings of the report, with a lively debate on how to address some of the key challenges highlighted. As the Delegate for MINEP noted, “managing the environment is not the affair of one person alone; solutions can only be found through different actors working together in partnership”. FCTV will now work to incorporate all of the comments and recommendations into the report and a final version of the official PPP Review will be available shortly.
