Environmental Education in Lake Valencia
In 1993, Tierra Viva started the Environmental Education Project for the Lake Valencia watershed with funding from the European Union through Living Earth Foundation. Within this project a series of programmes were delivered in order to promote the development of participative environmental projects which address environmental issues in schools and communities and aim to improve the quality of life. A total of 20 schools, 14 NGOs and more than 49,000 people participated in 116 local environmental projects through the Environmental Education for Lake Valencia Watershed project. These participants included teachers, pupils and local residents. The projects confronted environmental problems through specific actions, encouraging reflection and the exchange of information and were identified through participative analysis.
Tierra Viva was recognised for its environmental education and community development work in the Lake Valencia Basin. An award was given by the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the Inter-American Foundation in recognition of Tierra Viva's work in poverty alleviation through environmental education.
This project concluded in 1995 and since then Tierra Viva has become a fully independent partner of Living Earth, although we continue to work in panternership sharing ideas, experience and providing support.
Following the work in Lake Valencia, Living Earth and Tierra Viva worked together on two subsequent projects;
