On 21st October 2011, Living Earth Uganda facilitated a community awareness meeting at Mulago Community Centre, Kawempe Division, on the ‘Right to a clean and healthy environment’.
The event provided a forum for community stakeholders to engage with local leaders; to outline issues of concern affecting their communities and review ways to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
In all, twenty nine stakeholders comprising the Micro Project Management Committee, small micro enterprises, Village Health Teams and opinion leaders attended. Participants raised concern on a number of issues impacting negatively on their communities; these included flooding, poor solid waste management and drainage systems through to a lack of stringent laws in place to mitigate these.
Area local councillors reiterated their willingness to support environmental-related activities and thanked Living Earth Uganda staff for facilitating the event.
Three coordinators were selected to represent each parish and oversee the facilitation of follow up actions, encompassing petitioning relevant authorities and organising community clean up exercises.
Nominated representatives will report to the Chairperson of the Micro Project Management Committee accordingly.
