Barclays Bank Uganda Ltd and Living Earth Uganda, undertook a sensitization and cleanup exercise on 5th November, 2011 at Katwe Kalintunsi on Entebbe Road as part of the Barclays Make A Difference Day (MADD) initiative; engaging staff, local community leaders and community members.

The main objective was to pay tribute to a Barclays staff member, Brenda Omuntu, who lost her life in a flooded drainage channel after heavy rain on 14th September, 2011. The initiative also sought to raise awareness amongst community members on proper solid waste management practices and outline their responsibilities to maintain a clean and healthy environment. A barrier was constructed at the drainage channel where the accident occurred as a monument to Mrs Omuntu, to prevent any future similar incidents.

LEU Staff took the lead in coordinating activities, assisted by Barclay’s staff. Activities included; de-silting drainage channels, sweeping and picking up litter through to slashing and sensitization. Rubbish was collected and loaded onto awaiting KCCA trucks for transportation to a designated disposal site.

The area Local Council Chairperson outlined his support for the initiative and assured that there would be an increase in such initiatives within the communities

The Barclays bank (U) Managing Director thanked the initiative organisers and urged members to undertake other MADD activities that encourage giving back to the community. Work equipment was issued to community mobilizers and leaders for the purpose of encouraging continuity of clean ups within the community.
