Programme Activities - Training Workshops

LENF offered a twelve month part time qualification in Environment and Community Development that was externally accredited by the Open College Network. OCN is the largest academic accreditation body in the UK, specialising in community learning programmes. Here are some examples of workshops that LENF administered:

Community-work Skills:

  • Explore and develop communication, observation, analytical and group work / teamwork skills.

  • Consider how these can be used when working with communities.

Participatory Approaches:

  • Understand why strong community participation is essential for programmes with social and environmental concerns.

  • Develop a number of participatory techniques and methods and learn how to adapt them for use in a range of community settings.

  • Understand why individuals and groups will not participate equally.

Training for Trainers:

  • Provide a framework for training others in a variety of settings.

  • Enhance and develop appropriate skills to design, deliver and evaluate training skills.

  • Explore their uses when working with communities.

Supervision for Staff and Volunteers:

  • Provide a flexible framework for one-to-one and group supervision which can be adapted to different situations.

  • Enhance and develop appropriate skills to provide supervision to others.

  • Explore their uses when working with all levels of the programme.

Firm Foundations for Organisational Growth

  • Reach consensus on defining an environmental NGO.

  • Examine and identify organisational structures that are appropriate for a Nigerian NGO.

  • Understand how to develop a mission statement, aims and objectives for an NGO.

  • Design and implement a workplan.

Environmental Issues in Community Development

  • Understand the tension between development and nature.

  • Identify what sustainable development means in a rural context.

  • Understand how involving different stakeholders can help resolve environmental issues.

Environmental Education for Change

  • Identify a range of environmental education methods and approaches.

  • Understand how different methods can be employed in a range of community settings.

  • Examine ways in which communities can participate in environmental education activities.

Financial Systems for Small Organisations

  • Understand the importance of financial systems.

  • Design practical financial systems for NGOs.

  • Produce a budget for a small project.

Fundraising for NGOs

  • Design a fundraising strategy.

  • Produce a funding proposal for a range of donors.

  • Design a marketing strategy for small organisations.
