Programme Activities - Community Radio
Radio is a powerful means of communication because it reaches people directly in their communities and utilises the strong tradition of oral communication.
In September 1998, LENF set up and established a radio recording studio in Port Harcourt. Radio programmes were mostly made 'in the field', with the help of the villages, recorded in Port Harcourt and distributed to the state radio stations for broadcast.
All the villages selected for the LENF programmes fall within their state radio reception area and there were sufficient numbers of radios in each community for this medium to have a significant impact.
In Bayelsa State, thirteen environmental education radio programmes were recorded to support LEEAP. The programmes introduced the Niger Delta environment and the challenges associated with coastal zones. The region's problems of depleting natural resources, low agricultural and fish yields, flooding, erosion and landslides were addressed. Local and technical solutions to these environmental concerns were examined and discussed. Radio listeners were prompted to consider the role they could play and to examine the effects of a community not participating at all. The programmes were interactive and listeners were asked to write into the station with their views and comments.
In Cross River State, an exciting interactive radio series of thirteen programmes addressed the environmental issues in the state. The 30-minute programmes consisted of interviews with people involved in Cross River forest management and they highlighted the effort of those communities that are already working successfully. The programmes were transmitted across the state in Pigin English |
