Leading Sustainable Development Training

Living Earth is facilitating a training programme; Leading Sustainable Development for Local Government Officials, which was designed based on a training needs assessment carried out in 2004 by Living Earth.

The overall aim is to build the capacity of government institutions to enable them to take the lead in the sustainable development of the Delta.

The one-year programme incorporates seven training workshops, a series of individual study activities, evidence of learning tasks and learners’ support workshops. The London Open College Network is formally accrediting the training.

There are 33 participants on the course, 29 from local government councils, 2 from the ministry of local government and 2 from the local government service commission.

The training consists of 6 modules, (outlined below). The first training session was in January 2007 and all the training modules are likely to be completed by October 2007.

The LEF training approach emphasises action learning, and adopts a rich mix of training experiences to achieve the learning objectives.

As part of the programme 5 local NGO practitioners, three from Living Earth Nigeria Foundation (LENF) and two from Institute for Sustainable Development of Pro-Natura International (PNI/ISD) have been trained to facilitate the training modules.

The course is currently being run in the Bayelsa State. There is likely to be another pilot training course in Delta State before the training is up-scaled, and delivered in all the States in the Delta region of Nigeria, with representation from all the local governments in the Delta.
