Background to Living Earth Ghana

Living Earth Foundation Ghana (LEFG) was established in 2002, and is a registered NGO in Ghana. LEFG has its own Board of Trustees, made up of 5 distinguished Ghanian individuals.

  • Joyce R Aryee - Chief Executive, Ghana Chamber of Mines. (Chair)

  • Ama Kudom-Agyemang - Environmental Journalist, GBC Radio

  • George Owusu Afriyie, National Director, Dept. of Parks & Gardens

  • Awulae Annor Adjaye III, Paramount Chief, West Nzima Traditional Area- Member

  • Irene Heathcote, Western Regional Director, Environmental Protection Agency – Member

Shortly after LEFG was first established, it helped to set up a cold store facility for fish caught off the coast of Accra. The cold store, located in the Jamestown region of Accra, ensures that the fish caught by the local communities can be hygienically stored before being sold. LEFG facilitated a partnership between Shell Ghana and a local NGO the Muslim Relief Association of Ghana. This has proven to be a very successful partnership and the cold store continues to be a vital asset the the fishing communities of Jamestown.

Since this time LEFG has developed a number of its own projects, focusing broadly on environmental education and community programmes.

LEFG is currently in the process of developing its capacity and pursuing partnerships with local private sector companies and other local and national organisations in Ghana.
