Cameroon Environmental Education Support Project - Phase 2 (CEESP II)

Project Background
An external EU evaluation of phase one of the Cameroon Environmental Education Support Project I (CEESP I) deemed it a resounding success and recommended that the programme continue, highlighting three specific areas for further work; environmental education teaching resources; teacher training (both pre-service and in-service); and to extend teaching to farmers. Therefore, under the remit of the recommendations, building on the success of CEESP I, and Living Earth's other Environmental Education projects, LEF has developed CEESP II.

The project is funded for 2 years (2003-2005) by the European Union and UK Department for Environment and Rural Affair's (DEFRA) Darwin Initiative.

Project Objectives
The overall broad objective of CEESP II is to improve the quality of teaching and learning of Environmental Education (EE) in the formal and informal education sectors in 5 provinces of Cameroon (North West, South West, Centre, Littoral and West Provinces). This is in order to develop a greater awareness and understanding of sustainable natural resources management and to maintain biodiversity in Cameroon.

Project Activities

  • To produce locally appropriate EE teaching resources for primary and secondary schools in 5 provinces

  • To develop and deliver pre- and in-school teacher training in EE. For teachers, education inspectors, NGO staff and teacher training colleges

  • Facilitate capacity building within government ministries (Education, Environment and Forestry departments), through training workshops to ensure sustainability of the programme outcomes.

  • Develop and deliver a series of environmental radio programmes, for farmers and government extension workers to help them manage the resources more sustainably and to make more informed decisions about the use of the natural resource base.

CEESP II Publications
In partnership with the Government of Cameroon (GoC) and with the participation of teachers and people working in the informal sector with communities, Living Earth Cameroon has designed and developed two environmental education manuals, published in both English and French;

Delivering Environmental Education: A Guide for Teachers

Delivering Environmental Education: A Guide for the Informal Sector

The aim of the teachers manual is to clarify the core concepts and practices in Environmental Education and give teachers the tools they need to bring this exciting form of teaching into the classroom. Similarly the aim of the manual for the informal sector is to show how people can use these core concepts and practices in Environmental Education in their daily lives.

These core concepts are to help people;

  • become aware that the environment surrounds us, supports our daily life, and we are part of it

  • understand how are actions affect the environment and how environmental damage affects our lives

  • make informed decisions about actions that help safeguard our environment for today and the future.

These publications were launched in Yaounde on 5th June 2006

The first phase of this project, CEESP I, ran between 1996-1998.
