In January 2010, Living Earth participated in a national conference in Iran, designed to address the Sustainable Development challenges facing Asalouyeh. Asalouyeh is a city in southern Iran which is at the heart of the oil and gas developments associated with the South Pars Field, one of the largest oil and gas deposits in the world. Edgardo Garcia-Larralde of Living Earth delivered a presentation which drew on lessons learned from international experience of managing the impacts of such projects. |

In December 2009 Living Earth Nigeria Foundation, in partnership with Living Earth Foundation (UK), International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Niger Delta Wetlands Centre, and Social Development Integrated Centre (Social Action), celebrated the official lauch of its EU funded community energy project which aims to addresses the region's ongoing energy crisis. The project will enable communities and community based enterprises to share the benefits of energy production in the Niger Delta. |

In October 2009 Living Earth took part in a Fair Trade workshop in Caracas organised by our Venezuelan partner Fundación Tierra Viva (FTV). Participants from community based enterprises attended the capacity building workshop, delivered as part of FTV's ongoing Fair Trade project and which aimed to help small enterprises and co-operatives to better engage in fair trade business initiatives.

Living Earth, in partnership with Bristol Zoo Gardens and FCTV, have released a vibrant music album ‘Voice of the People’ which talks about issues facing forest people living in the Dja Reserve in South Eastern Cameroon. The songs deal with issues from corruption to the poaching of gorillas, and they are a blend of Cameroonian rap (courtesy of the artist Vicky Brown) and traditional West African beats and harmonies. |
Recently showcased on several Cameroonian radio and television shows, the album has been stimuating debate across the airwaves...

Living Earth wrote an article for the October 2009 edition of the Millennium Development Goals Review (MDG-Review) magazine. The article focuses on the community based conservation work carried out by Living Earth and Bristol Zoo through our Dja Periphery Community Engagement Project and demonstrates the importance of ensuring that local communities are fully engaged in conservation and development processes. |

Between 25th September and 4th October 2009, six teachers from Aberdeen and two community development artists visited the North Slope as part of Living Earth's ongoing Polar Pairs Exchange Programme. In addition to sharing teaching resources and ideas, the Aberdonians were able to experience an important part of the Inpuiaq culture as the whale hunting season got underway. In July 2009, Living Earth delivered a presentation on Sustainable Development to Shell Russia and Shell Joint Venture staff. Living Earth had been invited by Shell Russia to share our experiences in implementing community development projects around the world and to highlight the importance of sustainable development within the business context.

Living Earth published its first year report on its Developing Good Governance in the Niger Delta project, a five-year project funded by DFID and implemented in partnership with Living Earth Nigeria Foundation, Academic Associate Peace Works and Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. The report details the challenges faced and the project's achievements to date. |

In July 2009, Living Earth attended the Arctic Economic Development Summit held in Point Hope. The summit, which had the theme: 'Two Regions, One People, No Boundaries', brought together regional representatives from North Slope Borough and Northwest Arctic Borough. Key discussions focused on how to achieve locally owned development that both benefits communites and reflects their traditional values. |

Living Earth's Polar Pairs School Exchange Programme featured in the 'Times Educational Supplement Scotland (TESS)'. The exchange programme, which encourages shared learning between communities in Aberdeen and North Slope, Alaska, has "challenged ideas" and is enabling students and teachers to gain a broader global perspective, as well as developing a stronger sense of their own cultural identity.

Living Earth Foundation, in partnership with Fondation Camerounaise de la Terre Vivante and Bristol Zoo Gardens, has produced a manual for Game Guards working with local communities in protected forest areas in Cameroon. The manual is part of Living Earth's ongoing Dja Periphery Community Engagement Project that seeks to ensure that traditionally marginalised communities are able to actively participate in the conservation process. |

Kampala Jellitone Suppliers, a biomass briquette company which makes fuel briquettes from agricultural waste, has won the Ashden International Award for Avoided Deforestation. This small business was supported by Living Earth Uganda through its Urban Livelihoods Project which provided capacity building training in business management and encouraged the development of public-private partnerships within the framework of urban service delivery. |

Through Living Earth Uganda's ongoing Enhancing Plastic Waste Collection programme, 3.5 tons (3534 kgs) of plastic waste have been collected and delivered to Plastic Recycling Industries for recycling. A number of collection centres have been set up throughout Kampala district and over 1900 people have participated in workshops designed to raise awarenss about the impacts of waste and the benefits and potential that recycling holds. |

From 26th April to 2nd May 2009, six teachers from the North Slope, Alaska participated in the latest visit in the Aberdeenshire/Alaska teacher exchange as part of Living Earth's ongoing Polar Pairs School Exchange Programme. The trip enabled teachers to learn from their counterparts through sharing their experiences, particularly in addressing areas of shared concern that had been identified over the course of previous visits.

Living Earth was invited to write an article for the latest edition of the Millennium Development Goal (MGD) Review, an independent publication that is dedicated to tracking the progress of the MDGs. Living Earth's article "The Heart of Development: It's a Joint Effort" argues for the need to actively engage with local communties in order to bring about effective change; the article provides case studies from Living Earth's diverse programmes in Cameroon, Uganda and Nigeria.

In February 2009 graduates from Living Earth Nigeria Foundation's (LENF) ongoing training programme: Leading Sustainable Development for Local Government Officials, attended a graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievement. The course, which is accredited by the London Chapter of the Open College Network, addresses the challenges faced by local government officials in the Niger Delta and seeks to build their capacity to promote and support sustainable development projects in the region. |

Living Earth Uganda is working in a Public-Private Partnership with Plastics Recycling Industries Uganda Ltd and DED to tackle the problems of plastic waste management in Kampala. Enhancing Plastic Waste Collection in Kampala District was officially launched on 12th January 2009 in an event which brought together policy makers and implementers, civil society organisations, private sector and donors with aim of raising awareness and encouraging the development of cross-sector partnerships between the plastic waste sector and disadvantaged communities. |

Five teachers from Aberdeenshire, Scotland visited the North Slope, Alaska from 1st to 9th November 2008 as part of Living Earth's ongoing Polars Pairs School Exchange programme. The teachers involved were invited to visit local schools, exploring the differences between their school systems and developing new classroom ideas. The visitors were also invited to participate in the district wide Inupiat Culture Day, gaining an insight into the Inupiat way of life. |

On 31st October and 1st November 2008 Living Earth, working in partnership with the Sustainable Development Department of Sakhalin State University, facilitated a two day residential training course on 'Involving People in Community Groups'. The course represented the latest module in Living Earth's ongoing training course in the region: 'An Introduction to Sustainable Development'.

Living Earth facilitated a workshop entitled "Social License to Operate" at this year's IUCN World Conservation Conference. The conference took place in Barcelona from 5th to 14th October 2008 and brought together participants from both the corporate and the charitable sector. Living Earth's workshop explored the challenges and opportunities involved in engaging local stakeholders in corporate projects in Latin America.

Living Earth has written an article for the October 2008 edition of the Millennium Development Goals review, an independent publication that was circulated at the recent high-level UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals. The article Global Partnerships and the MDGs discusses the nature of Living Earth's strategic partnership with Shell and highlights the importance of cross-sector partnerships in achieving sustainable development.

As part of Living Earth's ongoing work in Alaska, in June 2008 we organised a tour of indigenous language programmes in the UK for three education professionals from the North Slopes of Alaska.
Led by Jana Hacharek of the North Slope Borough School District, the trip included a four day programme hosted by the University of Wales followed by three days at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Gaelic college in Scotland.

Living Earth facilitated the third visit in the Polars Pairs School Exchange programme. between Aberdeenshire and North Slope Alaska. From 20th May to 30th May 2008, five teachers from schools on the North Slope, Alaska, paid a visit to local Aberdeenshire schools where they participated in school activities and gained an exciting insight into Scottish educational practices.
